The People Chow Rating System
Like everything else, food can have a rating. In People Chow world, the better it is for you, the higher the rating. The worse it is for you, the lower the rating.
NOTE: We are not nutritionists. The ratings below are based on a little research and a lot of common sense. Food scores are based on average serving sizes. For more information about food and nutrition, see the U.S Food and Drug website.

5s are the Best! Produce
MORE ABOUT PRODUCEIf it grew from the ground, a bush, or a tree, give yourself a BIG GREEN VEGGIE HIGH 5! Fruits, veggies, herbs, etc., are the healthiest foods you can eat. Organic is best. Just make sure you wash them well. Smoothies count, too. Learn more about produce in Exploring the Vibrant World of Vegetables – A Culinary Adventure

4s Are Grown Too Legumes, Nuts, and Whole Grains
MORE ABOUT LEGUMES, NUTS, AND WHOLE GRAINSLegumes, nuts, and whole grains come in a close second to produce. They can be rich in protein, fiber, and other nutrients. The Power Trio: Exploring Legumes, Nuts, and Grains for Optimal NutritionIf you’re eating these, give yourself a slimy green bean 4!

3s Come from Animals Meat and Dairy
MORE ABOUT MEAT AND DAIRYIf it comes from an animal, either dead or alive, it’s a cheddar yellow 3. Meat and dairy products can benefit you, but some are processed and have “extra” ingredients. Meat and dairy products can be high in fat. Tread carefully in this category. Pick meats and dairy products that are lower in fat and don’t have additives.

2s are made by humans Processed Foods
MORE ABOUT PROCESSED FOODWe’re approaching the “Uh-Oh Zone.” Processed foods usually have more than a few ingredients (including additives) and have packaging (come in a can, box, or bag). The companies that make these “foods” need to include additives so they last longer in cans, boxes, and bags. Processed foods can be frozen, dry, or liquid. They may have some nutrients (like boxed cereal), but they are generally not that good for you. If you’re eating processed foods, give yourself a scary orange 2.

1s are the Worst! Junk Foods
MORE ABOUT JUNK FOODThese foods are definitely in the “Uh-Oh Zone.” All of us should stay away from this category as much as possible! Junk foods include candy, chips, sodas, and most things that have more than 10 ingredients and taste sweet or salty. While these foods should be a “0” or a negative number (like -5), you can reluctantly give yourself an uh-oh zone red 1 for foods in this category. And that’s only because occasionally, you might find a vitamin or a gram of protein or fiber.
